“Archives provide hindsight, insight and foresight.”
The Diocesan Archives (first established in 1998) manages and preserves the records of the Anglican Diocese of Adelaide and the Province of South Australia. This includes, for example, records of:
- Bishops and Archbishops
- The Registrar and Secretary of Synod
- Church Office
- Parishes, churches and congregations
- St Barnabas Theological College
- Many committees, working groups, task forces, etc
- A range of Anglican organisations and societies in South Australia
The Archives office, staffed by the Diocesan Archivist, provides information storage and retrieval services and research assistance to the staff of the Anglican Diocese of Adelaide, to parishes and churches of the diocese, to our mission and ministry partners and to other Anglican organisations in South Australia. The archivist is available to advise and sometimes to assist parishes or other affiliated groups or organisations with their archival needs.
Our archive holds material dating back to the origins of the Anglican church (Church of England) in South Australia. Information may take a wide range of forms, including but not limited to: minutes and reports, administrative and financial records, parish registers, letters, diaries, clergy memoirs and publications, magazines, newsletters and yearbooks, scrap books, newspaper cutting books, slides and photographs, architectural documents, parish histories, leaflets and other publications, artworks and other artefacts.

“Archives record decisions, actions and memories. Archives are a unique and irreplaceable heritage passed from one generation to another. Archives are managed from creation to preserve their value and meaning. They are authoritative sources of information underpinning accountable and transparent administrative actions. They play an essential role … by safeguarding and contributing to individual and community memory.” (UNESCO, 2011)
From the Universal Declaration on Archives
“And I will also be diligent that at any time after my departure you will be able to call these things to mind.”
